Freedonia国家财政陷入困难，有钱的寡妇Mrs. Teasdale（玛格丽特·杜蒙 Margaret Dumont 饰）推荐Rufus T. Firefly （格劳乔·马克斯 Groucho Marx 饰）出任国家领袖，她才答应出资资助国家。Freedonia的邻国Sylvania想要对其发起进攻，Sylvania的大使Trentino于是派出了两名间谍Chicolini（奇科·马克斯 Chico Marx饰）和Pinky（哈勃·马克斯 Harpo Marx饰）去刺探Firefly的情报。然而这两个不专业的间谍却闹出了不少笑话。Firefly的秘书Bob Roland （泽伯·马克斯 Zeppo Marx 饰）让Firefly多加小心，然而昏庸的Firefly并没有放在心上，随着他和大使Trentino的矛盾越来越大，战争终于无可避免........。老农民阿方索回到了自己的家乡照顾身患重病的儿子，他重新找到了曾经居住的老房子，却发现自己的前妻带着女婿和外孙依然住在这里。等待着他的故乡已经几乎变成一片荒原，庞大的甘蔗种植园环绕着他的老房子，日夜烟雾缭绕。阿方索17年前抛下家人离开，如今他试图重新返回，挽救亲情，却发现在这个已经物是人非的地方，很多答案只能自己去寻找。。Love and desire fill the minds of villagers in a Hungarian speaking village in Transylvania, Romania, even in their old age.
